Course Overview: Collage is “an artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface, often with unifying lines and color.” Interact with this exciting medium and leave with something uniquely beautiful. This four-week instructional class gives you the opportunity to create from observation and finish with one or more projects for your art porfolio.
Instructor: Katherine Horst is a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. She is a mixed media artist that has focused on the medium of paper-based collage for the past twelve years. Her love of impressionistic painting and texture led to her fascination with this style. She sees the toned paper scraps as brush marks on her surfaces. The variety of weights and textures in her papers adds depth to the layers. There is a lot of freedom in the genre of collage and Katherine enjoys the resulting challenges of her ever-changing process. Katherine and her husband own and operate Horst Arts in Manheim, Pennsylvania.

Course Overview: The Graphic Design course will focus on the various elements of design, including balance, space, line, and value. We will discuss approaches to design and how they can be used to communicate message clearly, such as simplification, hierarchy, and scale. While these concepts will absolutely be useful in computer-based design, this course will not make use of computers. Various in-class exercises will be used to explain and instill the basic concepts of design that will be a strong foundation for those pursuing careers in design. Even students not pursuing graphic design will use these concepts in common, everyday tasks—from designing social media posts to writing letters to organizing spaces.
Instructor: Jason Horst graduated from Grace College with a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. After graduation he worked for four years as a typesetter and book designer for a publishing company. He then spent six years working for an advertising agency, where he honed his design and programming skills in the area of website design and development. In 2003, Jason launched a graphic design business named Piksl Design, which morphed into Horst Arts in 2019. Jason specializes in graphic design and website development for small and large businesses. He has worked with clients such as Coca-Cola, HGTV, Simpson Strong-Tie, Fuse, and Paste Magazine.

Course Overview: Watercolor is known as an “artists’ paint made with a water-soluble binder such as gum arabic” which is “thinned with water rather than oil, giving a transparent color.” It can typically be found as dry cakes or in tubes of concentrated wet paint. Join us as we focus on using the dry paint method, where we will learn the basic techniques of watercolor and an overview of what it offers, enabling the student to learn and create simultaneously. As we progress through our class we will not only learn techniques, but the art of storytelling with this medium and the flexibility one has when using it. Students will finish the four-week course with two or more projects completed.
Instructor: Tori is a recent graduate of Summit International School of Ministry in Grantville, PA. She was born and raised in the suburbs of Milwaukee, WI, with art being a big part of her childhood. It wasn’t until her later teen years that she realized the gift it held and how much she loved to create and give it to others. What began as making thank-you cards moved to custom art for weddings and events and has now become a passion for her to create for others. While most of her art has been commissioned using various mediums, she truly feels at home with neutral and earthy watercolor palettes. Recently she has created a place for commissions and more at Tori-Anne Creative. And while she loves creating meaningful art, she also enjoys any opportunity to help others learn the simplicity and gift of art, firmly believing that learning something new doesn’t have to be boring!
